IVC filters are placed in the largest vein of the body, the inferior vena cava to help capture blood clots as they move throughout the body. These filters are often placed to prevent blood clots from traveling to other parts of the body including the heart and lungs. In August 2010, the FDA issued warnings to doctors and surgeons alerting them of all problems retrieving many of these filters.
